terrific twos | sneak peek | little bits

August 24, 2011

what is this terrible two thing? yes two year olds are sassy. they are finding their voice. using their words a little. lots of tantrums.

but really it’s just a learning phase. they have so much going on inside their little heads but the mouths simply cannot keep up. they get frustrated that we can’t understand

what they are trying to say. goodness. how many times have we asked our two year olds “ummm sweetie what did you say?” and you hear “bluffin fat cappy fish” and since this was the THIRD time they’ve said it-you know good and well you have to pull the nod and ‘oh yeah’ move.

as moms, we often get pretty snazzy at translating though don’t we?

sally, “nid doos keep.” and you look at mom puzzled and she nods and says “oh she’s just asking you for some grape juice.”

aren’t you glad to have mom around to translate?? whew!

well one of my favorite things as a children’s photographer is to just get down and observe. especially with toddlers. they just want to know you are in their world. i don’t want them in mine. how boring is that? i’m already IN mine!

but following them around. seeing what makes them smile, laugh, throw me looks of puzzlements, the serious looks…and really just capturing them.

i really really enjoyed this session and not just because my star subject shares the same birthday as i do.

(but that is pretty darn cool i have to say!)

and we ended the day with some ice cream. it’s always fun to see what my toddling subject will do with theirs. some attack the top and chuck the rest. but Miss K totally went for the bottom first.

maybe she knew that’s where all the yummy chewy chocolate was hiding? mmm!

as always. i have the best time photographing little people. they are so fun- i just get pulled right in. thank you miss K and i hope you had the BEST birthday!

princess at sunset | life. right now. | a 365 project | twenty nine

August 18, 2011

my 2 year old. soon to be 3 year old wanted to wear a pretty new hair band i bought and of course a fluffy boa. it was picking up all the prickly thistles and stickers you could imagine but she refused to take it off.

i love sunset light. it’s really my favorite kind of light. it’s soft and constantly changing.

these 3 images made me sigh. side by side. i tried a lighter black and white but the the emotion was lost without all the contrast.

not a lot of people think to look at what toddlers feet are doing- but it’s really fascinating to check out sometimes. oh and their hands. :) their hands and feet can tell us so much about how they are feeling in a moment.

these were all taken with my 50 1.4 @ f/1.8

almost at 30! my personal goal was 50 posts for a 365 project. i hope i can reach it!

HI, This is beautiful. Im wondering how you achieved good focus on yoru subject by using the f/1.8? I have trouble with this setting as my subjects are never in focus with little dof??
    Thanks for your help.

stamen and pollen | life. right now. | a 365 project | twenty eight

August 12, 2011

let me just say i find macro incredibly hard. it’s not something that comes ‘natural’ to me. you have to have an eye for these things.

and then settings. whew.

if lighting is not fabulous you need to a tripod. not want. but need.

you want to keep it as clean as possible so shoot with lowest high iso you possibly can.

shoot with the lowest high shutter speed you possibly can.

if you want to get close. i mean snort pollen, lick bee legs close…you need to switch to manual focus.

and…be patient.

i had the the most success using an aperture of f/10 and shutter speeds of 1/10….yes one tenth of a second. so a tripod was necessary.

i was not outside for this though. hand focus requires patient and practice. patience…and practice. say it over and over again and commit it to memory.

(good to make your mantra for any thing you learn in photography really)

the settings on these are all over the place. my iso was set to 2200 or so. way higher than i prefer and i did some clean up in lr.

and since my macro is a 60mm – i have to crop a lot to get even closer to my subject. i don’t mind. but if you are really into macro and you have full frame like i do-

you might want a longer lens. 😉

these are my humble attempts. i’m determined to do better and keep working on this. i’d love to fill my walls with some of my macro. :)

Were these taken inside? Because the light is lovely!

Melissa yes it was indoors. My daughter picked me this flower and I thought….hmmm wonder what pollen looks like. 😀

Photography is and has been my dream for as long as I can remember! It really takes a bit of dough though! Slowly I am getting more lenses for my Canon T3…You must have to have a room to hold all your “jewels”
